Keep the manufacturer visible
When a player appears in different manufacturers’ sets, keep each issue as its own record. Wayne Gretzky’s Topps and O-Pee-Chee #18 issues are separate references. The full set name matters even when the number matches.
Check the entire subset name
For modern cards, retain the full set or subset wording supplied by the source. Our Crosby entry is the Upper Deck Young Guns #201 issue, described by its source as unsigned and not serial-numbered. A different autograph or numbered issue requires its own identification.
Use the source before making a claim
Follow the entry’s source and inspect the corresponding issue. Review the notes for distinctions supported by that source. A catalog lookup alone cannot establish that a particular physical card is original or unaltered.
